Utah is a “no fault” state, which means that when drivers are in an accident, each driver’s own insurance company pays for the damages done to the driver’s car. In addition, each driver’s car insurance companies cover bodily injuries of the policy holder.

Unlike “at fault” states, there is no need for the fault of an accident to be determined before car insurance companies pay an accident claim.

However, Utah does require that each driver carry a minimum amount of liability insurance to cover medical costs and damages that may be incurred to their autos as a result of an accident. While you are considering car insurance, find the top ten cars to own and insure.

Comprehensive and collision coverage are required by Utah drivers if their cars are financed or leased. In order to maintain a lease or a loan, the lease holder or lender will require that Utah drivers carry both comprehensive and collision coverage.

Carrying these two types of policies will ensure that the leasing company or lender is covered in the event of an accident, and they are reimbursed for damages done to the financed or leased property.

Comprehensive coverage will pay for damage to the vehicle due to weather, theft or vandalism. Collision coverage will pay to repair damages to the vehicle in the event of an accident. Additional coverage is optional, such as Uninsured Motorist coverage. This type of coverage will pay for damages caused by uninsured or under-insured drivers.

If the driver owns their vehicle, and particularly if the car is an older model, the driver may elect to carry only a liability policy. A liability policy does not

Utah state law requires that drivers carry minimum levels of auto insurance coverage for bodily injury and damage to property. These minimums are:

  • Bodily Injury Per Person – $25,000
  • Bodily Injury Per Accident – $65,000
  • Property – $15,000

Car insurance companies express these limits in a type of “formula.” The formula for Utah limits would be expressed as 25/65/15. In addition to these state-established minimum limits, Utah requires that drivers carry Personal Injury Protection, or “PIP,” coverage. At least $3000 of PIP coverage must be maintained by each driver to cover medical expenses in the event of an accident.

Utah does not require coverage for vehicles that are designed for off-highway use or non-operational, non-registered vehicles.

Utah Penalties for Uninsured Drivers

Utah state law mandates that all drivers carry at least the minimum coverage established by state law. Failure to maintain the minimum level of coverage may cost the driver their auto registration, as well as a fine of $400 or more. If convicted for failure to maintain insurance coverage, the driver’s license may be suspended.

Utah maintains a state-wide database that matches registered vehicles with their insurance coverage. If a registered vehicle is not insured, a letter is generated and sent to the owner of the vehicle. If the owner of the vehicle does not quickly produce proof of insurance, they may be fined from $400 to $1000, and may have their drivers license suspended.
